Vegetables

Carrots and sweet potatoes are highly nutritious as well. Eating more dry beans such as peas, pinto beans, and even kidney beans can be very good.
Fruits
Fruits can be your friend and enemy at the same time. Try to eat 2 cups of them each and every day. Eating a variety, such as fresh, frozen, canned, or even dried fruit all have different advantages. You can drink fruit juices, although you should use moderation when doing so due to the high levels of sugar found in a lot of them.
Milk
Milk is your friend due to all the wonderful calcium it contains. For adults, 3 cups is the ideal goal. For kids 2 – 8, 2 cups is where you should be. When choosing milk products or yogurt, you should concentrate on fat-free or low-fat. Those of you who don’t like milk or can’t have it, should try the lactose free products or other sources of calcium such as fortified foods, beverages or vitamen supplements because calcium is very important.
Meat & Beans
Eating 5 ounces a day is a good goal, as you should go lean when choosing your protein. When eating meat, always broil it, grill it, or bake it, as this prevents grease from adding to the equation. You should vary your protein with fish, beans, peas, and nuts being as large a part as red meat.
When cooking food, you should limit solid fats such as butter, margarine, shortening, and lard although these foods may add flavor to your dishes, they also help raise your cholesterol as well. To help keep your saturated fat, trans fat, and sodium low, you can check the nutrition labels.
